BLUE PLATE BEEF PATTIES
adapted from Taste of Home 2000 Annual - Main Dish
1 egg
2 green onions, green tops included, sliced
1/4 cup plain bread crumbs*
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 1/2 pound ground beef
House Seasoning or salt and pepper, to taste
12 ounce jar beef gravy
1/2 jar water
2 - 3 teaspoons prepared horseradish**
1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced thin
In a large bowl beat the egg and stir in onions, breadcrumbs, seasonings and mustard. Mix well.
Add ground beef and mix well. Shape into 4 thick patties. I like to put a thumn indent in the
middle to help it cook more evenly. In a large frying pan season beef patties with House Seasoning
and cook about 4 minutes on both sides; drain if necessary. In a small bowl whisk together the gravy,
water and horseradish. Add mushrooms to pan of beef patties and pour gravy over top. Cook covered
until beef patties are done and mushrooms are tender. We like our well done and that is 165 degrees.
Remove lid and let boil down to reduce gravy if desired. Makes 4 large servings.
*original recipe calls for 1/4 cup seasoned breadcrumbs instead of the plain and seasonings.
**I used 2 teaspoons horseradish but we couldn't really taste it. I'd go with the three teaspoons
to begin with. Add more to taste.
